The A-List 50 Great Australian Restaurants

NEILA
Take a bloke with Greek heritage, in love with a girl from Chinese stock, pop them in a country town best known for its restless Japanese PoWs, and something remarkable happens. For part of the week, Jerry Mouzakis and Anna Wong run their farm, growing olives and fresh Chinese red dates that end up in their restaurant on a menu that careens wildly and vibrantly between the Mediterranean and Asia.
Why? So here you are on the main drag of a farming town, in a plain little BYO, with chopsticks for the caramelised nuts and pickled vegetables, followed by rice paper rolls with tea smoked duck and caramelised pork hock. Then there’s the 100-mile philosophy underpinning the produce used. Wong’s knack for matching seemingly disparate ingredients, and Mouzakis’s hospitable service. Pinch yourself because you won’t believe it otherwise.
The Dish: Sichuan pepper cured venison with Chinese red date salad.
The cost: Typical entrée $19; Main $33; dessert $15
Where: 5 Kendal Street, Cowra (02) 6341 2188.
