AGT Restaurant Guide 2012

wonderfully inventive food with impressive attention to detail

"The taste of deception is seldom sweeter than at Neila. From a fairly simple dining room, diners are rocketed to the celestial heights of Anna Wong's intensely personal and adventurous cooking. She displays a sharp awareness of how flavours interact - an entree of drunken Sichuan chicken comes with lime and enoki soup; pork hock is elevated to stardom by a sensational Chinese red date salad; and tea smoked duck breast needs only an intense cherry relish and sunflower seed salad. On arrival, there is a bowl of tea-infused walnuts with spiced fennel, and after the main meal, a thoughtful selection of imported cheeses is served with a great chilli, peach and watermelon jam. Much of the impeccable produce comes from Neila's own orchard and farm. Service is convivial, well informed and well paced. It's wonderfully inventive food with impressive attention to detail.
