Australian Gourmet Traveller Review 2013

Regional dining at its best

"Don’t be fooled by Neila’s unassuming exterior and décor – the thrills are all on the plate, with flavours and textures so unexpected, so original that eating here is exhilarating. You’re welcomed with a dish of vibrant tea-infused walnuts and spiced fennel, and already you’re seduced. What follows is a daring display of flavour and harmony. In an entrée of pork hock, citrus caramel and green mango salad, the sticky toffee crunch of the exterior coats pieces of pork as sweet and melting as marshmallows. There’s a sublime main of duck leg, peaches, beans, almonds and red shiso; another of seared Sichuan pepper-spiced venison with prune celery and potato. Neila is BYO only, and regulars bring their finest wines, assured the food will do them justice. Don’t forget a sticky for the signature dessert of rhubarb, lemon verbena, sago and brown sugar meringue. Regional dining at its best.
